I am a photographer who documents unrecorded areas of society. In the 1970s, I took environmental portraits of children from more than a hundred families in New York City with different socioeconomic backgrounds.
One of my significant projects involved photographing the key pioneers of the second wave of the women's movement who transformed the American Landscape. In 1981, I published their portraits and stories in their own words in my book 'Particular Passions: Talks with Women Who Have Shaped Our Times.' The 46 women include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Billie Jean King, Julie Child, and Gloria Steinem.
I also documented the interiors of the traditional houses in Turkey, a significant part of that country's cultural heritage. My work, spanning eight years, preserved a disappearing way of life. These interior portraits are in my book, The Silk Road: Then and Now.
My project, photographing a world-class garden over four years, evolved into a documentary about a multi-generational family of 30. It has become the story of protecting the history and legacy of this family.
My work has been widely exhibited and published, with portraits in the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian, and New York Historical Society. My pictures appeared on over 1,000 media platforms, including Netflix, Nvidia, Intel, National Geographic, MoMA, the British Museum, and The Washington Post.
My dedication to my subjects is evident in my ongoing project. More than half a century after I first photographed the children, I have begun to
re-photograph, and interview some of them.
I'm 86 and working as fast as I can. I have so much more to accomplish.
