Based in the San Francisco Bay area, Edwin Carungay is a graphic design and multimedia producer – with a profound passion for photography. His journey began in Southern California’s skateboarding subculture, where he often snapped shots of friends skating on the streets, ditches, and backyard ramps. This love for skateboarding and documenting its certain adventures sparked his initial interest in photography. Edwin’s formal training started in his high school darkroom and graphic arts courses, then continuing into university alongside his studies as a graphic design major. Photography remained a constant sideline companion in his life. It was Edwin’s wife, Lesha, also a photographer, who introduced him to Alex Webb’s work through the book, The Suffering of Light. This was an epiphany – marking his introduction to the fine art world of street and documentary photography, igniting a passion that transformed his hobby into a dedicated pursuit. As a street and documentary photographer, Edwin’s devotion has led to local and international exhibitions, and awards from long-admired institutions. His formative years while in the skateboarding scene are evident in the unscripted and often sentimental images he makes. When not working as a creative marketing and communications professional, he spends his time exploring avenues and streets, capturing colorful, candid moments of people navigating their lives, both in his hometown and abroad.

I grew up on an Iowa (USA) farm and drove trucks, tractors, and heavy machinery at a very young age. I loved being out in the weather and open-air fields. One of my earliest memories is riding with my parents when they took a drive to look at area agricultural crops freshly planted and growing in the springtime. These trips inspired my current desire to make car trips to see the world. I studied psychology and sociology in college and was planning a career as a counseling psychologist. These experiences formed my inclination to photograph in public outdoor areas and investigate how the world is “painted and put together”. I acquired a very good expensive camera on a total whim a long time ago, and something radical shifted for me. I left graduate school six credits shy of a master’s degree to pursue the art of photography, which I intuitively felt was my path to truth, instead of the science. I have held many jobs: farm hand, gas station attendant, auto dealer parts manager, car salesman, government employee in two different states, free-lance commercial photographer, real estate investor, landlord, property developer, and photography instructor. Photography has been my main energizing activity for fifty years, for both commercial clients and for myself, pursuing and refining my personal vision of the world. My photographic aesthetic is based on observational street/documentary photography. I currently have several self-assigned documentary projects that I am pursuing. My interest is producing photo-books as a depository for my work, that have availability to future generations.

I got into street photography as a passion after long days of work. I started exploring it in 2016, and I’ve found that street photography allows me to tell daily stories through images, capturing people with my vision and emotions. It’s about seeing each character through my lens and presenting them in a carefully chosen frame. I don’t focus too much on the technical side of my Fujifilm camera; instead, I focus intensely on discovering something unique or even unsettling in each person’s character to convey a story. Street photography brings me joy by letting me capture fleeting moments that reveal something about the people in my images. Over time, I’ve learned a lot by studying photo books and award-winning photography. I take time to appreciate each photo from other photographers, often wondering, "How did they capture this? What made them choose this specific moment?" Through this reflection, I realized that every photographer has their own way of seeing and capturing street life, and I respect their individual approaches. I’ve adopted bits of their skills into my work, but instead of copying, I’ve built my own unique style. In the end, my goal is to create street life photography that brings what I see to your soul. My talent in street photography has been recognized and featured in several publications and exhibitions. My work captures the essence of urban life and has found its place in notable books and projects dedicated to the art of street photography. In 2023, my photography was included in Urban Unveils the City and Its Secrets – Volume 08, a project by the Urban Photo Awards in Italy, which highlights the hidden sides of urban landscapes. In 2017, I was featured in Soul of Street – Volume 12, published by Photography & Philosophy Magazine in Germany, showcasing street photography that resonates with human stories and philosophical insights. That same year, my work was included in Street Photography in the World – Volume 1, a collection from Italy celebrating street photography from across the globe. Back in 2016, I contributed to Street Photography from Around the Globe in collaboration with the We Street collective, a project dedicated to street photographers worldwide. Additionally, in 2016, I had the opportunity to exhibit my work in Bucharest, Romania, where my photographs were displayed as part of a curated exhibition.

I come from an artistic family of musicians, painters, sculptors and writers. I was given my first camera when I was ten years old. On every possible occasion, I took pictures of family and friends. What I enjoyed most was catching people in their everyday life. In my late teens, I started wandering the streets of Paris taking pictures of people. I would then shut myself up in a dark room. I still remember the excitement when I discovered what I had shot. After 15 years of working in finance, I decided to put an end to my career and started what I had always wanted to do as a child: photography.
