The Earth Cries Fiercely by Leslie Gleim
The Earth Cries Fiercely presents Earth as a living entity reacting to climate change like an allergic response. Just as the body defends itself against harmful agents, our planet responds to pollution, deforestation, and exploitation with eruptions, wildfires, and floods. These phenomena are Earth's adaptive mechanisms—scientifically understood as responses to environmental stress, such as volcanic eruptions, wildfires, and coastal erosion. Ecosystems are being pushed beyond their capacity to regenerate as each photograph captures Earth’s fierce response, uncovering both distress and resilience.

The images reveal Earth’s various stages of grief and healing. They depict her active response to environmental stress, turning natural disasters into clear messages woven through land and sea. Volcanic eruptions, scorched earth, and collapsing structures become symbols of Earth’s adaptive yet strained defenses. Through this lens of engaged and active empathy, the series invites viewers to see these scenes not solely as devastation but as urgent signals demanding our attention.

The Earth Cries Fiercely calls on each of us to consider our impact on Earth’s resilience and the urgent need for action. It implores us to heed these fierce cries—before we exceed the planet’s ability to adapt and thrive.

Leslie Gleim
Leslie Gleim is a Honolulu-based fine art photographer who has called Hawai’i home since 2007. Her artistic journey took a transformative turn in 2017, when she embarked on her first helicopter flight over Hawai’i Island to document lava flows. Witnessing new growth emerging from destruction profoundly influenced her perspective, inspiring her to delve into themes of regeneration, transformation, and the dynamic cycles of creation and destruction that define Hawai’i’s volcanic landscapes. Her work continues to evolve as she crafts visual narratives that explore the intricate relationships between natural forces, climate change, and human impact on the land. Leslie’s photography has been exhibited and published locally, nationally, and internationally.
