Since 2018, I have been photographing cherry blossoms, drawn to their fleeting beauty. Captured across various locations, weather, and light, these delicate blooms mark both spring's arrival and time’s quiet passage. This series, 'where, in what form, we will meet again', reflects a meditation on impermanence and transformation.
The title, inspired by Kim Gwang-Seop’s poem In the Night, resonated deeply with me. The words echo the subtle recognition of transient beauty I have experienced through years of photographing blossoms—an acknowledgment of the ephemeral moments that shape our lives.
Cherry trees, originally from Japan, bloom here in America, mirroring my own experience of being born in China and living abroad. This sense of displacement and transformation finds a quiet reflection in the blossoms I capture. My work draws from the deep influence of traditional Chinese and Eastern philosophy and literature, which have shaped my worldview since childhood. Though I grew up in China, living in Europe and America has added layers to my understanding, reinforcing the philosophies I carry within me.
Each photograph attempts to hold a moment that cannot last. The monochromatic tones highlight form, light, and shadow, inviting quiet reflection. In this stillness, I hope to create a space where fleeting beauty lingers a little longer.
'where, in what form, we will meet again' asks the viewer to embrace impermanence and reconnect with nature’s cycles that continuously shape our lives.
Julie Wang
Julie Wang was born in China and has spent nearly equal parts of her life in China and abroad, living in Europe and the United States. She graduated from a medical school in China but chose to leave behind a career in medicine as she discovered a deep love for art, literature, film, and nature. Frequent moves during her childhood, following her parents’ careers, along with later experiences studying and living in various countries, shaped her open-minded worldview and appreciation for diverse cultures and the beauty of nature.
Over time, these influences became central to her artistic vision, with photography emerging as her most natural form of expression. Inspired by poems and paintings from different cultural backgrounds, Julie aims to capture moments that speak to the universality of human experience. Through her lens, she transforms the world around her into reflections of her thoughts and emotions, creating work that bridges cultural perspectives and celebrates the quiet beauty of life.
