I'd like to share a series of images that I began capturing in the winter of 2020 during the pandemic.
With the unexpected free time brought on by the coronavirus, I started taking long walks along the
Mississippi River. I was captivated by the ice formations along the riverbanks. Soon my camera
joined me on these cold walks.
The ice that forms in a moving body of water creates a remarkable and ever-changing variety of
structure and formations, a process further enhanced by freeze-thaw cycles and crystallization
effects. I photographed these patterns with a high-resolution digital camera to capture maximum
detail. In post-production, I aimed to shift the images into that enigmatic border between nature and
abstraction. This more abstract portrayal of the ice seems to convey a sense of stillness and
movement simultaneously, mirroring my own emotions as I walked along the river.
Buck Holzemer
As an eight year old boy, Buck Holzemer began his photography
career by climbing onto a garage roof to take pictures of his friends
playing basketball in the driveway below. Although this seemed to
limit his on-court skills forever, it introduced him to the wonders of
viewing the world through that magic little window on the back of the
camera. After an eight year detour to study the unseen world
through physics and mathematics, he returned to the “magic little
window” in his late twenties and began a career in photography. He
added filmmaking shortly after that and has enjoyed a varied and
successful career as an image maker for many years.
He has won numerous awards. These include the prestigious Clio
award for television commercials, several appearances in the Communication
Arts Photography Annual, awards from Print magazine
and the Grand Prize for fine art work from PDN magazine. In 2013
he won a best of show award from the International Photography
Awards and the People’s Choice Award from National Geographic
in 2019.
A versatile image maker, he has worked in a wide variety of photographic
genres . His filmmaking work has included work in Minneapolis,
Los Angeles, New York, Milan, Italy and Guatemala.
During the past five years has has focused most of his time on personal
photographic projects.
